This weekend, my wife rented two lovely films from BlockBuster which were very enjoyable and I highly recommend them.
The first film was entitled The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and it featured many wonderful British actors such as Judy Dench, Maggie Smith, Penelope Wilton (Cousin Isabel Crawley on Downton Abbey), and Bill Nighy (Minister Rufus Scrimgeour). Such a wonderful cast! The film involves the intersecting lives of British retirees who seek to take up residence in, what they believe to be, a newly remodeled Indian hotel. Much to their chagrin, the retirees discover that the hotel is in a delapidated and failing state which mirrors their own lives. In the course of the film, both the retirees and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel find new meaning and purpose. This British film is such a delight and I highly recommend it.
The next film we viewed this weekend starred Morgan Freeman in The Magic of Belle Isle. In this film, Morgan Freeman plays Monte Wildhorn, a crippled writer, who has given up on life. Aided by his nephew, Monte takes up summer residence on Belle Isle and prefers a bottle of whiskey to his typewriter. Things begin to change for Monte when he meets a divorced woman and her three daughters who live next door. Enchanted by the four ladies, Monte experiences a rebirth. This film was so beautiful and it reminded me of films such as Finding Forrester and Educating Rita.
