Review: After reading Lauren Winner's Girl Meets God: On the Path to a Spiritual Life, I knew I had to read more books by this amazing and insightful author.
I recently ordered her book, Mudhouse Sabbath: An Invitation to a Life of Spiritual Discipline. In this book, Winner explores the rich rituals practiced within Judaism and how these rituals can enrich the spiritual lives of Christians who wish to implement these rituals into their own individual and corporate practice of spiritual discipline. Not only does Winner give a Jewish background to these rituals, but also suggests how these rituals can be implemented into the Christian life. The Judeo/Christian rituals that Winner addresses in her wonderful book include the following:
- shabbat/sabbath
- kashrut/fitting food
- avelut/mourning
- hachnassat orchim/hospitality
- tefillah/prayer
- guf/body
- tzum/fasting
- hiddur p'nai zaken/aging
- hadlakat nerot/candle-lighting
- kiddushin/weddings
- mezuzot/doorposts
Not only does this book give insight into enriching the spiritual lives of Christians, but also gives a glimpse into the Jewish roots of Chrisitianity.
